Is It Time to Update Your Social Avatar?
A strong social media avatar should be instantly recognizable, reflect SUNY Oswego’s updated brand identity and remain readable at mobile sizes.
If your current avatar is hard to see, uses outdated graphics or doesn’t align with our refreshed visual system, it may be time for a new one.
To support consistency across all official university accounts, SUNY Oswego has established avatar guidelines and a standardized set of templates. These avatar designs reinforce our brand, improve clarity on mobile and help distinguish verified SUNY Oswego accounts across platforms.
Custom versions can be created for your department, office, program or initiative with our Canva templates.
Avatar Guidelines
- All university-affiliated accounts must use the official SUNY Oswego avatar template provided by MarComm.
- Departmental or sub-brand logos often lose readability at small sizes, so avatars are designed specifically for clarity across all devices.
- When uploading avatars to platforms like Facebook, Instagram or X, set the size slider to the smallest scale so the entire design appears cleanly in the circular frame.
- Do not modify, redesign or create your own versions of official avatar artwork.
Page Names and Usernames
To maintain consistency:
- Your Page Name must begin with “SUNY Oswego” and clearly identify your unit (e.g., SUNY Oswego Theatre, SUNY Oswego Admissions).
- Your username/handle should begin with @SUNYOswego where available (e.g., @SUNYOswegoAlumni).
- If your preferred handle is not available, contact MarComm for approved alternatives.
Social Media Assets and Canva Access
SUNY Oswego provides a library of branded social media assets — including avatar templates, graphics and design elements.
Two Types of Resources Are Available:
- Publicly Accessible Assets
These include downloadable files available to anyone managing SUNY Oswego–affiliated social channels. - Canva Pro Teams Assets
A more extensive library of branded templates and tools is available to members of SUNY Oswego’s Canva Pro Teams account. This includes official avatar templates, social graphics, event layouts and more.
