Assessment Advisory Committee

The word "assessment" is not always met with an open mind and a willingness to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of our academic programs. But the reality is assessment can be a useful tool that not only improves student learning, but empowers faculty as well. Assessment is an ongoing process, one necessary for continuous improvement.

This web site is designed to help you navigate the Annual Assessment Reporting Process, introduce you to some of Oswego's trained experts, provide links to internal and external resources, and answer some frequently asked assessment questions. The focus of this page is program assessment, so if you would like more information about General Education assessment, please visit SUNY Oswego's General Education website. If you would like guidance regarding the assessment of writing, please visit Writing Across the Curriculum.

Why is assessment important?

The facilitation and ongoing improvement of student learning is a primary goal of SUNY Oswego. Various audiences are interested in the results of student learning assessment including academic departments, regional accrediting agencies, accrediting associations with disciplines, and state coordinating bodies. These audiences all have requirements for specific types of information at specific times. The SUNY Oswego annual assessment reporting process aids departments and academic programs in systematizing and documenting their assessment activities.

Committee Charge

The Assessment Advisory Committee was approved by the Faculty Assembly in February of 2010. View the original Advisory Committee Proposal. The charge of the Committee is as follows:

Work with the Assessment Coordinator to share information about best practices in assessment with the campus.

Work with the coordinator to ensure that SUNY Oswego is meeting assessment and continuous improvement expectations of our accrediting bodies.

Make recommendations to Faculty Assembly about policies and procedures related to learning outcomes assessments.

The annual assessment reporting process aids departments in five ways:

  • Assessing student learning more effectively
  • Keeping a record of their assessment efforts
  • Recording changes made due to assessment results
  • Better articulating and supporting arguments when requesting resources from administration
  • Documenting changes made in light of assessment results, which can be used when writing self-studies
