Dr. Johnston Hegeman

Vice Chair

Dr. Johnston Hegeman is currently the Assistant Vice President and Registrar at Frostburg State University. He has held a number of administrative positions since1976 that primarily focused on student success. He create an Academic Success Network, comprised of academic advising, tutoring, disability support, and developmental mathematics, and awarded three TRiO grants: Student Support Services, Upward Bound, and Upward Bound Math and Science. Dr. Hegeman was also the Head Men’s Soccer Coach for 16 years, served one year as Interim Vice President for Student Affairs, and current Chair of the Staff Senate. Recently, Dr. Hegeman co-chaired one of the ten Excellence in Academic Advising pilot projects under the auspices of the Gardner Institute and NACADA that resulted in a major revision of the academic advising model at Frostburg State University and the hiring of full-time academic advisors.

Dr. Hegeman received his B.A. and M.A. from Frostburg State University (then College) and Ed. D. from West Virginia University. His dissertation, The Use of Assessment for Institutional Sensemaking by Top Administrative Officials, focused on the relationship between strategic thinking and institutional effectiveness.

The SUNY Oswego review team will be the tenth Middle States that Dr. Hegeman has been a member.
