Elements of a healthy, equitable community — such as affordable housing, parks, quality schools, a thriving economy, environmental quality, access to healthy food, and connected transportation systems — provide cumulative health and equity benefits.

Redlining is a term that describes denying services (typically financial) to residents of certain areas based on their race or ethnicity. This video gives an in-depth look on how redlining has affected neighborhoods in America.

Food apartheid is more than the lack of grocery stores and other healthy food options in non-white and/or low-income communities. Food apartheid also points to the discrimination of communities of color when it comes to economic opportunities.

Syracuse thought that by building a giant highway through the heart of  it could become an economic powerhouse. Check out this article from The Atlantic to see how that decision created one of the most impoverished communities in America.
